The original maverick
Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 17:52
“I’m just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick,” said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants.
In the 1800s, Samuel Augustus Maverick went to Texas and became known for not branding his cattle. He was more interested in keeping track of the land he owned than the livestock on it, Ms. Maverick said; unbranded cattle, then, were called “Maverick’s.” The name came to mean anyone who didn’t bear another’s brand. ....
“He’s a Republican,” she said. “He’s branded.”

The most pathetic part of this whole maverick stunt was when McCain had to point out during the first debate that he was called a maverick. Really, is this what it has come down to? Here's some of the present day maverick's maverickness (is that even a word)
The Double-Talk Express
Talking about the debates, It should be obvious to anyone watching the debates that McCain's sense of entitlement comes through in not so pleasant ways.
Smug sneers ,avoiding shaking hand with Obama, not looking at Obama, or even shaking hands with him to calling him the other one. Is McCain so angry that people don't seem to share his highly inflated opinion of himself and this 'nobody' seems to be getting all the attention and love. I think it is a conscious strategy where he hopes to establish that Obama is neither ready nor his equal. But the final effect is one of a bitter old man with a scary sneer. I know this isn't fair but everytime I see McCain debating, my mind screams Cotton Hill, Cotton Hill.
I swear I did not see this page before I wrote this post. http://dhost.info/wcom/vanilla/comments.php?DiscussionID=804
