What a bummer
updated 6:26 p.m. PT, Sat., Oct. 20, 2007PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - Dozens of people in St. Maarten are being treated for latent tuberculosis after health officials warned that they may have been exposed to the illness by a stripper infected with an active form of the disease.
At least 40 people tested positive after the health department treated an exotic dancer from the Dominican Republic several months ago and sent her home, according to a government news release issued Friday.
What the hell do you tell your wife or family? Is nothing safe anymore? I bet none of these guys thought this could happen to them. The inquiring mind wants to know if they were infected by just being in the strip club or did they happen to get up close and personal with the lady in question. What a bummer!
delirious frenzy of certitude
But one thing I'm certain of is that totalitarianism hasn't gone away; totalitarian states may die out, but it will remain alive and vigorous. It is a spirit and virus. Religions can have it. People can have it. It's a solution. It's the dream solution. It's the delirious frenzy of certitude, which culture exists to contend against. One of the constant themes of the book is that any artist who fancies himself above politics is doing worse than dreaming. If you fancy yourself above politics you are actually in collaboration with the enemies of civilization, who would love you to think that. - Clive James
Truer words were never spoken. I was speaking with a friend when the talk veered to missionary work and the missionary zeal was blamed for the ills of the world. It was noteworthy to find that only Islam and Christianity were mentioned, maybe because these two are the cultures that are presumably at war now. My answer was, "do not blame religion, blame certitude" and as luck would have it, I chanced upon this interview in the Slate which is serializing Clive James' book Cultural Amnesia: Necessary Memories from History and the Arts
As for not blaming religion, there are episodes in South Park and Simpsons set in an atheistic future where groups of people fight over something that's not religion. Go God Go XII
Lance Mannion had a very intelligent take on this issue, and being the ass that I am, I did not bookmark it or tag it with Delicious. Dumb move.
